Gardener

Gardener painting by Stewart Irwin

Charlotte has claimed this painting. She says:

“I have broken the rules of my own project and have claimed this painting for myself. The rules say that only one painting each from the collection is allowed, and now I have two. I have no excuses, I just love this painting and can’t bear to part with it.

The figure looks quite formal, and Stewart was not formal, though he had the manners of a man from an older generation to me. It’s not a self-portrait, but it reminds me of going to visit Stewart at his house. There was a small garden and a little glass conservatory before you got to the front door, not as grand as in the painting, but reminiscent of it. I remember Stewart opening the door to me, saying hello and inviting me in. I miss him and will never forget him.”
