Wifes in Pop Shocker
(RainbowNetwork.com, 9.02) |

Not
only are the Readers Wifes (no, it's not a typo) the hippest DJs
in the land, they are now a pop group too. Likely lads Chelsea Kelsey
and Kim Phaggs are part of a line-up that includes pals Mark and
Jeremy, and they're all out for stardom with a couple of gigs in
London and Manchester, and an LP too - whoo! RainbowNetwork got
the lowdown from Chelsea.
Isn't being in a band a bit old fashioned?
Being in a band right now is nowhere near as old-fashioned as being
DJs. DJs are so '90s in fact, that we're thinking of renaming ourselves
'record players'.
Are the other band members going to be annoyed when people start
thinking that the Readers Wifes are just you and Kim (like Debbie
Harry, she may be a blonde, but she ain't Blondie)?
They won't be annoyed probably because Jeremy and Mark actually
like being in the background. I know! What funny men! Actually we
thought of calling the band something different to our DJ names
but we feel we've already found our one good-name-in-a-lifetime
and that's Readers Wifes. Plus the name suits the music - perfectly
poppy but a bit grubby and council at the same time.
Who do you sound like?
We sound like The Sweet tonguing the Pet Shop Boys at a Human League
Party hosted by a malevolent ABBA with the KLF DJing New York fisting
classics from the early '80s. On ACID!
What's your best song?
We've all got our own favourites. The one we want to bring out as
a single is called 'Bitch at the Brits.' It's about a very messy
night at the annual Brit Awards with everyone shoving each other
out of the way coz they've taken too much coke in the celebrity
toilets. It's just really about how vile the whole music industry
is, really.
Are you going to be playing your own records at Duckie, or is
that too cringey a thing to do?
We keep forgetting to do that. I don't think it's that cringey.
Basement Jaxx do it and they're alright.
What would be the highest pinnacle of achievement that you'd
like the band to reach?
A Christmas Number 1 with the song Julie Burchill wrote and gave
us to record. It's called 'Broken Angel' and is a right heartbreaker
to be sure.
Anything else you'd like to add?
Just that nothing amusing has ever happened to me in connection
with a spoon.
