Being vegetarians in the land of meat broth, bonito flakes and whale meat is a bit daunting, but with a bit of forward planning, the expression "bejitarian desu," and the spirit of adventure within us, not to mention Japanese people’s willingness to help, we eat some fantastic food.
- The fried leaf that accompanies my tempura
- The five course macrobiotic dinner we eat at Chaya, each dainty dish more beautiful than the last
- The Moss Burger – sea vegetables and pickles in a pressed rice “bun”
- Japanese Indian vegetarian food!
- Beautifully packaged takeout tofu burgers
- The tempura set meal in Osaka that we had to order through a computer
- Endless bento and vegetarian sushi in gorgeous boxes, bought from vendors at Shinkansen stations
- The ryokan breakfast: salad, tofu cooked in keep-hot pots, sauce with ginger and spring onions, rice and pickles, miso soup, egg and nori, tea, absolutely beautiful and lovely
The worst thing we ate: perfect strawberries, laid out in rows in the packaging, the most perfect shade of strawberry red, the perfect size and shape, perfect ripeness, yet tasting of fake chemical strawberry flavour.
Here's a little movie about the food that we ate (.mov, 3.7mb)
