They're gingery but they're kind of fun
(10.03)

Charlotte: Bloody hell, they're hot. Where are they from?
Kay: They're made by Cadbury-Trebor, it says Ahomka on the wrapper. I guess they're kind of mainstream sweets for people in Ghana.

(Gasps for cool breath) What do they taste like?
It's like putting a piece of ginger and several peppercorns in your mouth and chewing. That's what they taste like. Very hot, but once you get past the mouth-hurty sweating buckets stage it's pretty enjoyable. Ha ha! Charlotte is taking it out of her mouth because she can't suck it any longer, whereas I have managed to stick it out until the end.

I'll have another go on it later.
...Though at my first attempt I took it straight out of my mouth and went "Oh my god, it's too hot!"

(Breathes fire)
They're gingery but they're kind of fun. They're from Kevin's volunteer Joseph who has just come back from a holiday in Ghana, where he's from.

Have you ever eaten anything more mouth-hurty?
No. I've put a chilli in my mouth and that was really hot and made my eyes run but I think this is just as intense.

How does it compare to mouth-hurty salt and vinegar crisps?

The pain is very different. They're quite mild in comparison. They don't make you break out into a sweat as these sweets do. I've been sucking mine at work and beads of sweat were appearing on my forehead.

What did Kevin's volunteer say when he gave them to you?
I don't know. I wasn't there. They were just left in the desk, so the first time tried one I dodn't know. I saw on the packet that it said 'Ginger Sweets' and 'Hot' but I though "Oh, I like ginger" and didn't expect them to be as hot as this.

What did other people say?

Tarin likes them. Mark B pulled a face and complained about his ulcer.

Hooaaah, they're killing me.

PS. People keep emailing me about these sweets! They want hot ginger! Sweet makers, if you're listening, there is a global market for mouth-hurting ginger fun.

So where can people get them?

The short answer is: I don't know. The ones I ate were given as a gift and came directly from Ghana.

The long answer is: try contacting Cadbury Schweppes in Ghana, who own the Cadbury Trebor brand that makes Ahomka. Their details are below. I have no email address for them, I don't work for them, so quit your complaining and try emailing the company's head office in your own country.

How could something so small cause so much pain?
